Make Each Day Count

15Be very careful, then, how you live - not as unwise but as wise,
16making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

Ephesians 5: 15, 16

8 Steps To Make Each Day Count:
  1. Have a point of reference.
    • Write on a reminder/inspirational card any one of these phrases, or something of your own improvisation: "Live today fully," "Face today with faith and power," "Make today count," "Make the most of today," "Live today with Jesus in me."
    • Put the card by your bedside, or on top of your alarm clock.
    • When you get up in the morning, reach for the card and read it.
    • Read it until its full meaning registers.
    • If it's your habit to turn off the alarm clock when it rings, put the card on the button to block yourself from turning it off.

This provides a focus for you each morning, and it sets the day on its proper course.

  2. Appreciate the day.

This is the day that the Lord has made, I will REJOICE and be GLAD in it!

  3. Enter the day with God's prescence.

    2 Aspects of God's Presence:
    • General presence of God.
    • Manifested presence of God.

Welcome God into you for that day. Acknowledge your full dependency on the Holy Spirit. God will honour you and be active in you, in your breath, in your words and in your life.

  4. Go through the day with a scriptural prayer.

Select a verse which relates to your greatest need, and go through the day with that prayer.

14This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
15And if we know that he hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of him.

    1 John 5: 14, 15

    • Wisdom:
If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

      James 1: 5

    • Victory:
But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

      1 Corinthians 15: 57

    • Ability:
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

      Philippians 4: 13

    • Provision:
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

      Matthew 6: 33

  5. Get your bearings right.

Know where your things are. Clear up your piles of mess (if any) as soon as you can, for a messy house can deter people from getting things done, due to the enormity of the task of looking for things. This is especially a hinderance to those who already have a habit of procrastination.

  6. Fulfill your non-negotiables:
    • Word of God.
    • Prayer.
    • Written Plan

This is like your compass throughout the day. This helps you know what you are supposed to do. You cannot reach your goal if you have no goal.

  7. Make frequent stops for spiritual refreshment.

Sometimes, you get very affected by the world and tend to go off course.
For instance, when wicked people seem to prosper, you might get very frustrated and your day is ruined because of it. Hence, make frequent stops for spiritual refreshment.
Just because some wicked people prosper, don't get all wound up. Leave it and keep doing what is right regardless. Don't join in and wallow in the mud together with them. Remember, you're not supposed to be like them.

but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

    Isaiah 40: 31

The more violent the storm, the higher the eagles fly. This is because they take advantage of storm winds by locking their wings.

  8. Be realistic and make provisions for readjustments and re-alignments.

Pick up as quickly as possible if you ever do go off course. Don't think that "Oh, I've done something wrong and gone off course, the day is wasted and I shall start again only tomorrow. Hopefully, tomorrow will be better." Unfortunately, if today goes badly, tomorrow will go as badly if you keep doing the same things. Besides, things are bound to go wrong with your plan in the first stages of trying to stick to it, so if you throw away the rest of the day for a mistake early on, you'll find yourself throwing away one day at a time, only accomplishing your plan in the first few moments of the day when all goes well.

    • Forgive others.
    • Forgive yourself.
Like an aircraft, keep pulling yourself back to your course.

12See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.
13But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness.
14We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first.
15As has just been said: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion."

Hebrews 3: 12-15

Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Psalm 90: 12

The fruits of tomorrow are in the seeds of today.

If you take care of the seconds, the minutes will take care of themselves.
If you take care of the minutes, the hours will take care of themselves.
If you take care of the hours, the days will take care of themselves.
If you take care of the days, the weeks will take care of themselves.
If you take care of the weeks, the months will take care of themselves.
If you take care of the months, the years will take care of themselves.
If you take care of the years, a lifetime will take care of itself.
If you take care of a lifetime, eternity will take care of itself.
